oxygen absorber chemical

Posted by

An oxygen absorber chemical is a substance that can remove or reduce the amount of oxygen in a given environment.
Common chemicals
Iron powder is a widely used oxygen absorber. It oxidizes in the presence of oxygen, forming iron oxides. The chemical reaction is: 4Fe + 3O₂ = 2Fe₂O₃. As a result, the oxygen in the surrounding air is consumed.
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can also act as an oxygen absorber. It has antioxidant properties and can react with oxygen to prevent oxidation of other substances.
These oxygen absorber chemicals are often used in food packaging to prevent food spoilage caused by oxidation, such as rancidity of fats and oils in food. They are also used in the storage of some sensitive items like electronics and historical documents to slow down the rate of deterioration due to oxidation.
